There is an old belief that a watch stops at the very minute its owner dies. A Baltimore watchmaker on Thames Street kept six such watches under glass, each brought to him by a grieving family and never repaired. He said winding them would be like waking the dead, and he was not in that line of work.
Choose one watch with your eyes alone.
Read the name beneath it. Look at the hands and fix the exact minute they stopped. Do not touch the glass. These were never yours to carry.
Take your hand away from the glass.
Say the name and the minute three times, silently. Listen to the watchmaker’s clock.
Your watch has left the case.
Five remain. Read every name. Check every minute. Yours is not among them, and nobody touched a thing. Some appointments are kept without you.
